Purple with purpose.

In South Africa, Women For Change’s Purple Movement uses purple as a visible act of solidarity against gender-based violence and femicide. People changed their profile pictures to purple to bring attention to the crisis.

Our Purple look carries that spirit of solidarity into this design: women’s choices, dignity and the people they trust. Mzansi Connect is independent and is not affiliated with or endorsed by Women For Change.

Built around women’s choices

You deserve to work, study, travel and spend time with others on your own terms. Violence and harassment are never your fault. Our aim is to make reaching people you trust easier.

What matters

  • A button you can find by touch
  • Clear signs that your button press was noticed
  • Knowing when location or mobile signal is missing
  • Working with affordable phones and less mobile data
  • Sharing without unwanted tracking

What guides our design

  • You choose the people you trust
  • You decide who can see your location and can stop future sharing
  • No public location pages or hidden tracking
  • Know the difference between an alert being sent and a person seeing it
  • Comfort, easy-to-use controls and clear messages

We are designing for women’s everyday safety, including those affected by gender-based violence. We still need to listen to users and test the devices. Whether you wear one is always your choice. You deserve support either way.

One family. People you trust.

Our plan is simple: press for help, share what is available and keep your chosen people informed. Try the demo to explore the app with made-up details and practice alerts.

01 · Press for help

  • We are exploring an SOS button you can find by touch
  • An alert should start with a clear choice to ask for help
  • A sign that the button was pressed must not mean an alert was delivered

02 · Share where you are

  • Show when your location was recorded
  • Make old or uncertain locations clear
  • Say clearly when your location is not available

03 · Choose your people

  • Invite someone you trust and let them accept
  • Choose who can see a particular alert
  • Stop future sharing when you choose

04 · Know what happened

  • An alert being recorded does not mean help is on the way
  • See when a chosen person says they have seen it
  • Your alert should not close just because you stop moving

This is a demo, not a live safety service. Practice alerts do not send texts, phone notifications or messages to emergency services. The devices still need tests for mobile signal, charging, comfort and the SOS button.

Build with care. Prove each step.

We still have ideas for useful technology across our communities. First, we want to understand what women need and test the basics of these three designs.

Listen to women

ComfortEasy to useThoughtful research

Invite women to share what feels comfortable, what is easy to use and who they would want to contact. Taking part will always be their choice.

Test the essentials

PowerLocationMobile signal

Test charging, battery life, location accuracy and what happens when signal is lost. Share the results before promising how the products will perform.

Support local skills

RepairsTrainingFair costs

Explore local repair and support jobs, including opportunities for women starting out in technology. This support network is still an idea.

Ideas for our communities

Community internetConnected spacesSmart devices

Our earlier ideas include community internet, connected schools and shared spaces for small businesses. Each needs careful planning and testing before it becomes a service.

You choose who stays connected

See how the app and your chosen people could work together. These pages are demos with made-up information, not services that respond to emergencies.

Mzansi Connect App

See your devices, choose who you share with and follow what happens to an alert. Try it with made-up details.

Mzansi Cloud

An early look at tools for checking whether a device needs attention. Support teams should not be able to track anyone freely.

Personal Safety Tracker

Try the demo without signing up: choose a fictional device, share a practice alert and explore your choices. No real messages are sent.

Mzansi Marketplace

Our idea for connecting people with local product help and repair skills. The demo does not offer emergency responders or real bookings.

Building a Digital Economy

We hope to grow useful skills and local work as the products develop. These are goals for the future, not jobs we have already created.

01

Help Women Build Tech Skills

02

Explore Local Support Jobs

03

Make More Products Locally

04

Make Technology Easier to Access

05

Grow South African Tech Skills

Useful technology. More choice.

We want to build useful South African technology with the people who will use it. Women’s safety, privacy and freedom to choose come first.

“Technology built by Africans for Africans.”

We want products that are easy to understand, easier to look after and built around your choices. A personal-safety device can be one part of a plan for getting help. It cannot prevent every crime, promise rescue or replace emergency services.
